Athena, a young starving female artist lived in the mountains in the small town of New River Arizona. She loved to paint,
but her life-long ambition was to be a printmaker. She could hardly afford her painting materials, let alone a press and printmaking supplies. But as her art ability and passion grew, as happens to most starving artists, she learned to do without. She went without buying any new clothes just so she could buy her art supplies. As her clothes became torn and tattered, her closet began to dwindle until finally she had just one outfit for the occasional venture into the large metropolis, where she would go to buy art her supplies. |

Each day, to save wear and tear on her one remaining dress, she would sit naked in her studio and paint flowers on bottles that she could sell. She hoped one day to save enough to buy what she yearned for most - an etching press. She wanted to etch and do monotypes, allowing her creative juices to flow, but it would take many painted bottles to save enough for her press.
One day, Athena made the trip into the large metropolis to bring her painted bottles to a gallery; where she met a young man named Pablo. Pablo looked at her painted bottles and said, “What beauty you paint on these bottles. Are they a reflection of your sprit?”
Athena smiled and began to engage in conversation, quickly learning that Pablo was a metal smith. After a while, Athena convinced Pablo to build her an etching press so that she would be able to fulfill her printmaking passion. Pablo found her so enchanting; he was taken by her beautiful smile. He agreed, and would only to take some of the prints as payment. This was quite a gesture for Pablo, as his business was struggling, but was excited about the prospect of building a well-engineered press for the enchanting Athena. If he could build one for her, he might be able to turn this into a thriving business. |

Pablo began the construction. Some of his Bohemian friends came by to see what he was creating so intensely. He told them the story of meeting the lovely Athena. He barely had enough money for materials to build the press, but he completed it. Sadly he couldn’t afford to paint it, but it was able to be used, and he was ready to deliver it. He arranged to deliver the press to Athena’s studio in the mountains, but as he came to the studio he found a note from Athena. It read:
"Pablo, Sorry I can not be here to receive the press. Please leave it in the studio I will come back to the metropolis where you live with some prints for your payment soon. Thank you so much, Athena.”
She was embarrassed that he might see how impoverished she had become, but when he left and she saw the wonderful new press he had left for her, she went to work immediately creating wonderful prints. She printed nude every evening, having no idea that Pablo planned to come back to the studio to watch her create her master pieces on his unpainted press. |
